MoonDAO recently raised money from their token ($MOONEY) and NFT collection. The funds were used to buy a seat on the Blue Origin NS-22 (Jeff Bezos’ new rocket). The DAO got to vote on who they wanted to send to space and they voted in Coby Cotton, co-founder of Dude Perfect a YouTuber famous for trick shots. Coby went to space and back this morning. Becoming the first person ever sent to space by a DAO. The total trip took about 20 minutes!
MoonDAO is a decentralised autonomous organisation using blockchain technology to put space “in the hands of the people.” Its international community uses governance tokens to vote on funding research and exploration initiatives.
Having minted his “Ticket to Space” NFT, the 5,000 DAO members proceeded to vote for Coby to be their first astronaut representative, using more than $8 million collected in a crowdfunding campaign to purchase his ticket to the moon.
Coby then embarked on Blue Origin, a Jeff Bezos space tourism program that sends regular people into space for around 12 minutes at a time, with five other first-time astronauts.

“I’m just kind of in love with the idea of DAOs in general, I think that they have a lot of promise, like a tool set for people to collaborate and coordinate online,” said Pablo Moncada-Larrotiz, leader of MoonDAO and former member of ConstitutionDAO. “When you buy an NFT, you know, it’s pretty abstract. The idea that you could be selected to go into space because of it, now that’s interesting.”
Many see private space tourism as a glimmer of hope for humanity becoming a multi-planetary species. Launching the MOONEY token and sending members to space are phase one and two of the DAO’s mission. The third phase is to raise money for further space research and exploration, with the fourth phase being the creation of its own Moon colony. (The fifth stage is to “have sweet Moon parties.”)
Whether the DAO is able to achieve its future ambitions or not, its accomplishments stand remarkable on their own. So far, more than 600 humans have traveled outside Earth’s atmosphere, but the typical price tag on such a trip makes it inaccessible to most people.
